How to Use Cuisinart SS GB1 (2026)

Use the SS-GB1's grinder for the carafe, and its separate pod brewer for single cups. Start by rinsing both sides with water only.

Cuisinart describes two separate brewing systems. For bean, pod, speed, cleanup, and compatibility tradeoffs, see Best Coffee Maker with Grinder and K-Cup Combo (2026).

Coffee from the correct side, without mixing beans and pods

Which side should you use?

Choose the carafe side for whole beans or pre-ground coffee; choose the pod side for a single mug. Fill the reservoir for that side only. With pre-ground carafe coffee, switch on Grind Off. The instructions below follow Cuisinart's SS-GB1 instruction booklet.

What you'll need

Gather fresh cold water, your chosen coffee, and the correct cup or carafe. For batch coffee, use the gold-tone filter or a basket paper filter, not both. Leave space above the machine so you can open its lids without dragging a hot brewer across the counter.

  • Carafe with lid, or a mug larger than your selected serving
  • Whole beans, drip-ground coffee, or a compatible K-Cup pod
  • Charcoal filters, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth

Setup and brewing, step by step

Wash and rinse first, then follow only the brewing route you need. Beans belong in the grinder basket, loose grounds in the carafe filter, and pods in the single-serve holder. Never put coffee into either water tank. Keep lids closed while the machine grinds or brews.

1. Wash parts and fit the water filters

Unplug the machine. Wash the carafe, lid, and removable brew parts in warm soapy water; rinse well. Soak charcoal filters in cold water for 15 minutes, fit them in their holders, then rinse as directed in the booklet. Install each holder in its matching reservoir.

2. Run water through both sides

Fill the carafe reservoir to its 12-cup mark. Fit the empty grinder and filter-basket assemblies, close the lids, and seat the carafe. Press Carafe to enter carafe mode, press Grind Off, then press Brew/Off/Auto Off. Discard the water after brewing. Separately fill the pod reservoir, place a large mug beneath the spout, and run a 10-ounce cycle without a pod.

3. Brew a whole-bean carafe

Add water to the carafe reservoir for your batch, staying below maximum. Add measured beans to the dry grinder basket, following the booklet's scoop guide and capacity limit. Fit its lid and the separate brew filter and basket cover. Seat the carafe with its lid attached, leave Grind Off unlit, press Carafe, then press Brew/Off/Auto Off.

4. Use pre-ground coffee instead

Leave the grinder basket empty but installed with its lid. Put drip-ground coffee in the brew filter, fill the carafe reservoir, and close everything. Press Carafe, then press Grind Off so its light comes on, and press Brew/Off/Auto Off. For batch-focused alternatives, see Best Grind and Brew Coffee Maker Under $200 (2026) Compared.

5. Brew a K-Cup on the pod side

Fill and reseat the separate single-serve reservoir. Place your mug on the tray, open the brew head, insert a compatible pod, and close firmly. Press the desired serving-size button, such as 8 or 10 ounces. Let dispensing finish before lifting the handle; the needles are sharp and the pod is hot.

6. Program a later carafe brew

Set the current clock with Hour and Min, checking AM/PM. Hold Program until the display flashes, then set your start time with Hour and Min. Let it leave time-setting mode and press Program to arm automatic brewing; confirm its indicator is lit. Load water and coffee beforehand, choosing Grind Off for grounds.

7. Clean after each batch

Unplug and let everything cool. Empty grounds, wash the grinder basket and lid plus brew basket, filter, cover, and carafe, then rinse. Dry the grinder parts fully before adding beans again. Wipe the base; never immerse it. Follow the booklet's separate descaling directions when mineral buildup needs removing.

Avoid these common mistakes

Don't treat the carafe's cup markings as mug sizes or the charcoal filters as coffee filters. The markings guide batch water volume; the brew filter catches grounds. Charcoal filters sit in the water reservoirs. These distinctions save you from a watery mug or a basket full of loose grounds.

Troubleshooting: match the symptom

Check water, seating, and controls before assuming the machine is broken. Stop brewing and let it cool before opening anything that contains hot water. These checks follow the booklet; if leaks or electrical faults persist, unplug it and contact Cuisinart rather than removing the housing.

The ManualsLib booklet transcription also lists fill-limit warnings and charcoal-filter replacement intervals.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SS-GB1 grind beans for a single cup?

No. Its built-in grinder feeds the carafe side, not the separate pod brewer. Use the single-serve side for compatible pods rather than expecting beans to travel across.

Can I use pre-ground coffee in the carafe?

Yes. Put drip-ground coffee in the carafe filter basket and turn on Grind Off before brewing. Keep coffee out of the water reservoir.

How often should I replace the charcoal filters?

The SS-GB1 booklet recommends every 60 days or after 60 uses, more often with hard water. Replace the filters in both holders, not just the side you notice first.

Can I skip the first-use rinse?

No, follow the booklet and rinse both brewing sides before making coffee. Use plain water without beans, grounds, or a pod, and discard the rinse water.
